Dundee Road, Stoke-on-Trent ST1 4BS
We hope you have all had a wonderful and exciting Christmas break and that you are all ready to begin the spring term.
This half term we will be focusing on learning about the Ancient Greeks through our Learning Challenge Question, ‘What legacy did the Ancient Greeks leave?’ We will be developing an understanding about the origins of government, democracy, philosophy, Spartan and Athenian civilizations and what led to the fall of the Greek Empire.
During our English lessons, we will be learning how to write a character description and non-chronological report. We will be focusing on the structure of each of these genres and their language features. We will base some of our writing around what we have learnt in the Learning Challenge Curriculum. This will provide children with the opportunity to engage in the topic further and apply their skills in a cross curricular way.
In maths we will learn how to solve word problems involving multiplication and division including using our knowledge of factors and multiples, squares and cubes. To solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and a combination of these, including understanding the meaning of the equals sign. We will learn to compare and order fractions whose denominators are all multiples of the same number and to identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a given fraction, represented visually, including tenths and hundredths. We will work on recognising mixed numbers and improper fractions and convert from one form to the other as well as adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and denominators that are multiples of the same number. We will multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers, supported by materials and diagrams.
In P.E. this term, 5MH will be doing gymnastics on Fridays. The pupils will develop their ability to complete a gymnastic sequence which involves rolls, jumps and balances. 5HJ will be learning about the cardiovascular system in circuit training on Thursdays.
Reading and homework:
As always, please ensure that your child is reading at home every night with an adult. Children also have access to Bug Club at home where they can access further books appropriate to their ability.
All children will continue to receive weekly maths, spelling and points homework as well as access to ‘Rockstars Times Tables’. It is very important that your child completes all their homework as this is a consolidation of the week’s work.
Please feel free to contact the office to arrange a meeting or call if you have any concerns or queries.
