At Etruscan, our aim is to provide an ambitious, inclusive and engaging mathematics curriculum that enables every child to develop confidence, fluency and a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. We use White Rose Maths as the basis of our mathematics curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6, alongside NCETM Mastering Number in the early years and Key Stage 1, ensuring that children develop secure foundations and build their mathematical understanding progressively.
From EYFS onwards, children develop secure knowledge of number, calculation, fractions, decimals, percentages, shape, space, measure, statistics and algebra, while learning to apply their understanding to solve problems in a range of contexts.
Through a mastery approach, children make connections between mathematical ideas, use concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, and develop their ability to reason, explain, justify, generalise and think creatively. We aim for children to become resilient and independent mathematicians who persevere when faced with challenges, learn from mistakes and approach unfamiliar problems with curiosity and confidence.
Mathematical vocabulary and discussion are integral to learning, enabling children to articulate and justify their thinking clearly. We recognise that children have different starting points and provide appropriate support and challenge so that all pupils can make strong progress and develop the mathematical knowledge and skills needed for everyday life, financial literacy, future learning and employment.
