At Etruscan Primary School, Religious Education (RE) plays an important role in promoting pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Children explore what people believe and how this influences the way they live, developing the knowledge and skills to consider questions about religion and world-views.
We follow the Stoke-on-Trent Agreed Syllabus 2026–2031, with RE beginning in the Early Years Foundation Stage, where children develop an understanding of the world, a positive attitude towards others and respect for beliefs different from their own.
Our curriculum develops pupils’ religious literacy through ‘systematic’ units exploring individual religions and ‘thematic’ units comparing beliefs and practices. Lessons build on prior learning, with a strong focus on vocabulary to ensure all children can access and engage with their learning.
From Nursery to Year 6, children develop a progressive understanding of religion and world-views through three key strands: making sense of beliefs, understanding the impact of beliefs on individuals and communities, and making connections by reflecting on and evaluating different beliefs and perspectives. RE is enriched through links with other subjects, including Geography, History, Art, Music and Computing, helping children understand how religion has influenced people, cultures and the wider world.
Children are encouraged to discuss and debate ideas, share their own views and beliefs, make connections and remain curious about different world-views. Teachers maintain high expectations for every pupil and provide appropriate challenge and support so that all children, regardless of their background or starting point, can make good progress and succeed.
