Welcome to Year 5 Mr Hawkes

Spring 2018

Happy New Year!

We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas break and that you are all ready to begin this term.

Topic:

This term we will be learning about the USA. Our Learning Challenge is, ‘What’s so special about the USA?’ We will be learning about where the USA is relative to other countries in the world. We will compare and contrast the different climatic zones. In our science lessons we will be learning about Earth and space.

English:

During our English lessons we will be learning how to write a biography. We will be learning about the civil rights activist ‘Martin Luther King Jnr’ and will be creating a biography of his life. We will learn how to structure a biography considering the audience and purpose of the text, the type of language used and how to vary openers and sentence types.  We will also be writing fantasy stories. We will be learning how to structure a five-part narrative, how to use formal and informal language, emotive language and a range of punctuation.

Maths:

This term we will be learning to identify, measure and draw angles, to distinguish between regular and irregular polygons, to reflect and translate shapes, to complete, read and interpret information in tables and graphs, to find a percentage and a fraction of an amount, to find the area and perimeter of complex shapes, to read scales that include negative numbers and to be able to answer worded problems that include measurements of length, weight and capacity.

PE/Music:

In PE this term Year 5 will be doing rhythmic gymnastics on a Wednesday afternoon. On a Tuesday afternoon Year 5/6 will be doing combat sports and on a Friday afternoon Year 6 will be doing circuit training with BeeActive. In music we will be focusing on tone and pitch.

Reading:

As always please ensure that your child is reading at home every night with an adult. Children also have access to Bug Club at home where they can read further books appropriate to their ability.

‘Wow’:

We are very much looking forward to our trip on Thursday 11th January to the Northwood Stadium where the children will get to experience a range of American sports.

Please feel free to contact the office to arrange a meeting or phone call if you have any concerns or queries.
