Dundee Road, Stoke-on-Trent ST1 4BS
Year 5 and 6
We hope you have all had a wonderful and exciting spring break and that you are all ready to begin the summer term.
This half term we will be focusing on learning about the Ancient Greeks through our Learning Challenge Question ‘How did the Ancient Greeks change the world?’ We will be developing an understanding about the origins of government, the Olympics, philosophy, Spartan and Athenian civilizations and what led to the fall of the Greek Empire.
During our English lessons we will be learning how to write letters and diaries. We will be focusing on the structure of each of these genres and their language features. We will base some of our writing around what we have learnt in the learning challenge curriculum. This will provide children with the opportunity to engage in the topic further and apply their skills in a cross curricular way.
This term we will be learning how to add and subtract fractions and improper fractions, to find a fraction of a number, to multiply fractions, to round and compare decimals, to read and write decimal numbers as fractions and to round decimals to the nearest whole number or tenth. We will also be learning how to translate shapes in one quadrant, to calculate the area of squares and rectangles and to answer worded problems involving time.
In PE this term Year 5 will be completing boxercise every Friday afternoon with Bee Active. Year 6 and be completing striking and fielding games every Friday afternoon.
Reading and homework:
As always please ensure that your child is reading at home every night with an adult. Children also have access to Bug Club at home where they can access further books appropriate to their ability.
All children will continue to receive weekly maths and spelling homework as well as access to Education City and ‘Rockstars Times Tables’. It is very important that your child completes all their homework as this is a consolidation of the week’s work.
Please feel free to contact the office to arrange a meeting or call if you have any concerns or queries.
