Spring 2
Find out what we will be learning this half term below.
Spring 1
In Spring 1, we were learning about Europe for our Geography topic. We had a WOW afternoon which we really enjoyed.
We travelled on our aeroplane, with our passports, to different countries in Europe. We flew past different landmarks and physical and human features before landing in each of the capital cities. In each country we learned the name of the capital city, how to say ‘hello’ and looked at what food they ate. Finally, we tried a food from that country and wrote what we thought of it in our passports.
Local History Week
Monday 13th February – Friday 17th February
Year 3 focused on World War 2 and how this affected our local area, Etruria. As a class, we used historical sources such as maps, newspaper articles, photographs and digimap to examine what life was like during the war. Close to our school, we specifically looked at the 3 houses that were destroyed by an enemy bomb on Ladysmith Road.
We also linked this to Josiah Wedgwood and how he made Etruria. Once we had learnt about his famous factory, we began to explore the reasons why his family built a new factory in Barlaston and how this changed the lives of the people who worked there. To finish our week, we wrote a letter of reply to ‘Eileen’ who worked in the new Wedgwood factory saying what life was like in Etruria during the war time.
Art
To begin our spring art topic, we formed opinions on the artwork of Michele Clamp and Albrecht Durer. We then experimented with mixing watercolour paint to achieve a chosen colour. Each of us chose an animal we wanted to use to inspire our artwork. Our focus was using mixing skills and applying these to a composition to practise our painting skills. Once we had done this, we produced a final watercolour painting.
Autumn term
In the autumn term, we were inspired by the sketches of Georgio Morandi and Van Gogh. We practised the skills of hatching, cross hatching and shading. We investigated different media including charcoal, pen and different types of sketching pencil. After all our experimenting, we sketched a final piece using our chosen media.
